Resources for the vision impaired
Sharples Primary School is resourced for the education of children with a vision impairment. The pupils work alongside their peers for the majority of the day, with support from Qualified Teachers of the Vision Impaired and support staff who are qualified and experienced in working with children with a sight loss. In this way, the children are able to access the curriculum and achieve their potential alongside their sighted peers.
The school has a resource base with specialist equipment and our team prepare accessible resources for the children in consultation with class teachers and support staff. The resourced provision also offers specialist teaching of the skills children need to overcome their vision impairment like braille, touch-typing and IT skills. A mobility and independence specialist teaches age-appriopriate skills ranging from cane use, kitchen skills to accessing public transport and road safety.
Our car park is large enough to accommodate the minibuses, which transport the children with a vision impairment to and from school. Escorts accompany the pupils on their journey. Other adaptations have been made to the building to meet the needs of the pupils with a vision impairment.
We are very proud at Sharples of how well the children with vision impairment are integrated into all aspects of school life and how all pupils work together and support each other.
